Some of the St. Luke the Evangelist Threads of Healing Ministry Quilters went to Morris Middle School on May 5th to help some 5th Grade GT students learn how to sew a quilt. The Students were assigned the project of writing a report on the history of quilting, creating an original story and making a quilt for it. Three quilters had come earlier in the year to share some wisdom about quilting with the students. Eleven Quilters came this time to help the students with some hands on practice. Each student received 4 squares which they hand stitched together. Each was asked to put their names on their finished product and then each child’s finished product was sewn together giving the class their own class quilt! Both the quilters and students enjoyed their time together and were left with not only a sense of accomplishment, but a sense of community.
After their projects were graded some students were chosen to display their quilts on May 21st at Genoa Elementary School at the Gifted & Talented Student Showcase. Many families attended and the turn out was fantastic, exceeding the organizers’ expectations. All of the students were proud of their work and were happy to show off their quilts.
