Why Do I Need to Give to My Church?
Some of us as young adults have been conditioned to give when we get something out of the giving. For example,  “I will buy my coffee from this coffee shop because they help support independent coffee growers, I will buy these shoes/socks/underwear because they give a pair to those in need with my purchase, I am going to buy my car from these dealers because they help abused/abandoned animals, etc.”. There is nothing wrong with thinking this way. One might even argue that it is quite responsible. Many of these same young adults are looking at the church and asking, "What comes from giving to my church?". Well, let’s look at what comes from financially supporting your church.

Giving Follows Receiving
Everything that we have comes from God. He structured His provision to not only be received, but also share. If we use the money that we have to only satisfy our needs and wants, what is the point of having things? Have we totally missed the point? 

Giving Meets Needs
The Catholic Church is a non-profit organization. This means that we rely solely on the donations of its donors to pay for everything (from bills to the priests and staff salaries) that is needed to keep its doors open and assisting people. I don’t think that anyone ever thought that there might come a day when our church would be in danger of not being able to open its doors and administer to all who come to her in need. With the decline of donations during the pandemic, this possibility was very real.

Giving Glorifies God
When we give, we should give from our first fruits, by doing so we glorify God. This means that we will first set aside what God has asked us to share with His people and for His Glory and then, and only then, do we use what is left over to take care of our needs and wants. This does not mean that we put ourselves in a situation that we cannot pay our bills or have money left over for food. It just means that instead of spending our money buying everything we want first and give only of what is left over to help others, we instead, first give to God what rightfully belongs to Him. When we sacrifice something, we are giving something of value, for something or someone else that we deem to be an even greater value or greater worth. Sacrificial giving causes us to reshuffle, rearrange and rethink the whole of what has been given to us. When we give in such a way, we glorify God.

Giving Benefits Us
God has wonderfully orchestrated giving to benefit the giver and the recipient. Let us play out a scenario. There is a child who has been wanting a certain toy for some time now. The child has saved up all the birthday and holiday gifts received and talks about the toy obsessively. The day FINALLY comes when enough money has been saved up and the toy can be purchased! The parent takes the child to the store to get the toy. On their way in, the child sees what appears to be a homeless person sitting on the sidewalk. The child becomes overwhelmed with feelings of sympathy and compassion for this person. Before the parent could react, the child runs up to the person sitting on the side walk, smiles and says, “I hope this helps”, giving the person all of the money. The child returns happily and tells the parent, “We can go home now”. The parent, understanding the true sacrifice that their child has made by giving the money to help someone in need, is overjoyed and filled with love for their child because the parent can see that the child truly understands the meaning of giving. Overjoyed by this revelation the parent looks at the child and says, “We are going to go in that store and get you that gift AND after that, we are going for ice-cream!”. This is how our Heavenly Father treats us when He sees that we understand the true meaning of giving. He not only gives us to replace what we have given, but blesses us beyond that. There is only one time in the Bible that God says test me. “Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. Put me to the test, says the LORD of hosts, and see if I do not open the floodgates of heaven for you, and pour down upon you blessing without measure.” (Malachi 3:10)  

Giving Imitates Jesus
We’ve heard it said, “For where your treasure is, there also will your heart be.” (Lk. 12:34) It seems like once we become young adults we find ourselves appreciating the money that we have so much more and we become much more cognizant about what we spend our money on.
Many times, we tend to think, I don’t need to give that much. I need the little money I have. I can’t afford to give. I don’t have to give to my church since I give elsewhere. Or probably the most used, I’ll give later when I have more money. As Catholics we are asked to imitate Jesus, to have a heart like Jesus. Let us do a little activity. Make a list of all the things that you use your money for. Is there an imbalance to your spending? Where is your heart?

With this said, we ask that during this month of devotion, as we work to clean up our database, that you check to see who we have in your family unit. We ask that all children twenty-one years of age and older who are still living in the household and attending St. Luke, please be moved out of their parent’s family profile into their very own household profile, so as young adults, they can start thinking of how they spend their finances and are able to receive their own End of Year Contribution Statements from their parish. They can still have your address, they will just be in a separate household profile. This is not an authorization from the church to ask all children twenty-one years of age and older to move out…because Jesus said so! Anyone needing assistance setting up their online giving account or checking their household profile, can reach out to Lupe Saiz (development@stlukescatholic.com). Lupe and volunteers will be in the Narthex to assist you with checking who is still listed in your household profile and/or to update any information in our database February 12/13, 19/20, and 26/27 after all the Masses. ¿Por qué Necesito Dar a Mi Iglesia?
Algunos de nosotros, como adultos jóvenes, hemos sido condicionados a dar cuando obtenemos algo de dar. Por ejemplo,  “Compraré mi café en esta cafetería porque ayudan a apoyar a los caficultores independientes, compraré estos zapatos/calcetines/ropa interior porque les dan un par a los necesitados con mi compra, compraré mi auto a estos concesionarios porque ayudan a animales maltratados/abandonados, etc.”. No hay nada de malo en pensar de esta manera. Incluso se podría argumentar que es bastante responsable. Muchos de estos mismos jóvenes adultos miran a la iglesia y preguntan: "¿Qué se obtiene al dar a mi iglesia?". Bueno, echemos un vistazo a lo que se obtiene al apoyar financieramente a su iglesia.

Dar Sigue a Recibir
Todo lo que tenemos viene de Dios. Él estructuró su provisión no solo para ser recibido, sino también para compartir. Si usamos el dinero que tenemos solo para satisfacer nuestras necesidades y deseos… ¿de qué sirve tener cosas? ¿Hemos perdido totalmente el punto? 

Dar Satisface las Necesidades
La Iglesia Católica es una organización sin fines de lucro. Esto significa que dependemos únicamente de las donaciones de sus donantes para pagar todo (desde las facturas hasta los salarios de los sacerdotes y el personal) que se necesita para mantener sus puertas abiertas y ayudar a las personas. No creo que nadie haya pensado alguna vez que podría llegar un día en que nuestra iglesia estaría en peligro de no poder abrir sus puertas y administrar a todos los que acuden a ella en necesidad. Con la disminución de las donaciones durante la pandemia, esta posibilidad era muy real.

Dar Glorifica a Dios
Cuando damos, debemos dar desde nuestros primeros frutos, al hacerlo glorificamos a Dios. Esto significa que primero apartaremos lo que Dios nos ha pedido que compartamos con Su pueblo y para Su gloria y luego, y solo entonces, usaremos lo que sobra para atender nuestras necesidades y deseos. Esto no significa que nos pongamos en una situación en la que no podamos pagar nuestras cuentas o que nos quede dinero para la comida. Simplemente significa que en lugar de gastar nuestro dinero comprando todo lo que queremos primero y dar solo lo que sobra para ayudar a los demás, primero le damos a Dios lo que le pertenece por derecho. Cuando sacrificamos algo, estamos dando algo de valor, por algo o alguien más que consideramos de un valor aún mayor o de mayor valor. Dar con sacrificio nos hace reorganizar y repensar todo lo que se nos ha dado. Cuando damos de esa manera, glorificamos a Dios.

Darnos Beneficios
Dios ha orquestado maravillosamente el dar para beneficiar al que da y al que recibe. Vamos a representar un escenario. Hay un niño que ha estado deseando cierto juguete desde hace algún tiempo. El niño ha guardado todos los regalos de cumpleaños y festivos recibidos y habla obsesivamente del juguete. ¡FINALMENTE llega el día en que se ha ahorrado suficiente dinero y se puede comprar el juguete! El padre lleva al niño a la tienda a buscar el juguete. Al entrar, el niño ve lo que parece ser una persona sin hogar sentada en la acera. El niño se siente abrumado por sentimientos de simpatía y compasión por esta persona. Antes de que el padre pudiera reaccionar, el niño corre hacia la persona sentada en la acera, sonríe y dice: "Espero que esto ayude", dándole a la persona todo el dinero. El niño regresa feliz y le dice al padre: "Podemos irnos a casa ahora". El padre, al comprender el verdadero sacrificio que su hijo ha hecho al dar el dinero para ayudar a alguien que lo necesita, se llena de alegría y amor por su hijo porque el padre puede ver que el niño realmente entiende el significado de dar. Rebosante de alegría por esta revelación, el padre mira al niño y dice: “¡Vamos a ir a esa tienda y comprarte ese regalo Y después de eso, iremos por un helado!”. Así nos trata nuestro Padre Celestial cuando ve que entendemos el verdadero significado de dar. Él no solo nos da para reemplazar lo que hemos dado, sino que nos bendice más allá de eso. Solo hay una vez en la Biblia que Dios dice pruébame. “Trae todo el diezmo en el almacen, para que haya alimento en mi casa. Ponme a prueba, dice el SEÑOR de los ejércitos, y mira si no te abro las compuertas del cielo, y derrame sobre ti bendición sin medida”. (Malaquías 3:10)

Dar Imita a Jesús
Hemos oído decir: “Porque donde esté vuestro tesoro, allí también estará vuestro corazón”. (Lc. 12:34) Parece que una vez que nos convertimos en adultos jóvenes, apreciamos mucho más el dinero que tenemos y nos volvemos mucho más conscientes de en qué gastamos nuestro dinero.
Muchas veces, tendemos a pensar, no necesito dar tanto. Necesito el poco dinero que tengo. No puedo permitirme dar. No tengo que dar a mi iglesia ya que doy en otros lugares. O probablemente el más usado, lo daré luego cuando tenga más dinero. Como católicos se nos pide que imitemos a Jesús, que tengamos un corazón como el de Jesús. Hagamos una pequeña actividad. Haz una lista de todas las cosas en las que usas tu dinero. ¿Hay un desequilibrio en sus gastos? ¿Donde esta tu corazón?

Dicho esto, le pedimos que durante este mes de devoción, mientras trabajamos para limpiar nuestra base de datos, verifique quiénes tenemos en su unidad familiar. Pedimos que todos los niños mayores de veintiún años que aún vivan en el hogar y asistan a St. Luke, sean sacados del perfil familiar de sus padres a su propio perfil familiar, para que, como adultos jóvenes, puedan comenzar pensando en cómo gastan sus finanzas y pueden recibir sus propios estados de cuenta de contribución de fin de año de su parroquia. Todavía pueden tener su dirección, solo estarán en un perfil de hogar separado. Esta no es una autorización de la iglesia para pedirles a todos los niños mayores de veintiún años que se muden... ¡porque Jesús lo dijo! Cualquier persona que necesite ayuda para configurar su cuenta de donaciones en línea o verificar el perfil de su hogar puede comunicarse con Lupe Saiz (development@stlukescatholic.com).
