“Bodily demeanor (gestures, clothing) ought to
convey the respect, solemnity, and joy of the moment
when Christ becomes our guest.”
(Catechism of the Catholic Church 1387b)
What we wear says a great deal about the importance of the event we are attending and what and who we value. The Mass is a very special occasion, “a great and holy moment,” and proper dress is evidence of our belief and reverence for our Lord’s presence in the Eucharist and respect for the assembly who gathers with us to pray. Simply put, beach wear, picnic and casual outdoor sports wear, lounge wear, etc. are not appropriate attire in Church.
