Pentecost is a beautiful feast, when we remember the coming of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles and disciples...and us! At our Baptism, the Holy Spirit filled us with his gifts, and these are "confirmed" in us in the Sacrament of Confirmation. Pentecost celebrates 50 days since Easter and is often referred to as the birthday of the Church. On this day we celebrate the great event when the Holy Spirit came down upon the apostles and disciples. From that moment they recognized that they were empowered to go out into the whole world and renew the face of the earth by preaching the Good News of Risen Lord, Jesus Christ.
The seven gifts of the Holy Spirit that we all received at our Baptisms and were sealed when we celebrated the Sacrament of Confirmation are: Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety, and Wonder and Awe of the Lord. By virtue of our Baptism, all of us have these gifts, just waiting to be called upon. How many of us need a little boost from God’s grace in the form of one of the above spiritual gifts every day? A great spiritual exercise for all of us would be to spend some time meditating on these gifts of the Holy Spirit and how we can better call upon God’s grace in our lives.
Pray for God to open your heart and your mind
to the Gifts of the Holy Spirit.
